CHAPTER 20

‘I thought we’d agreed to just be brother and sister,’ said Faith as Vance advanced on her. ‘I can’t go through the pain of ending our relationship only to start it up again over and over.’

He stopped and took a deep breath. ‘You’re right. Neither could I.’

‘So how long have you had this place?’ she said as she wandered around the room, examining it.

‘A few months,’ he replied, eyes following her every movement.

‘You never give a definite answer these days. Just vague replies.’

‘It’s the best way.’

‘Even to me?’

‘Especially to you.’

‘Why?’

‘Because there’s so much pressure on me to be a good leader and you set the bar high.’

‘No, I didn’t. I fucked up. I was tricked into destroying our own product.’

‘You made a mistake. Any one of us could have done the same.’

‘You wouldn’t have done it.’

‘Perhaps. Anyway, I’m feeling the pressure of leadership and keeping things to myself helps me cope with that.’

Faith folded her arms across her chest. ‘Sounds like a flimsy excuse to me. You’re up to something, Vance. You’re buying up lots of property in the town. Even Edward Sanderson found that strange. You’re keeping secrets from those responsible for watching your back, you know more about Kelly’s family than you’re letting on and you’ve used Reza for jobs that me and Caleb, as your lieutenants, have no idea about. I get the feeling it’s all part of one big scheme.’

‘An interesting theory.’

‘Is that all you’ve got to say?’

‘What more do you want?’

She stepped closer to him. ‘You have secrets, dark secrets.’

Faith’s eyes searched his, which stared back at her unflinchingly, as beautiful and bright blue as ever. He was giving nothing away.

‘You’re not going to share then?’ she said when he remained silent.

‘There’s nothing to share.’

She leaned into him, pleased when his eyes flared. ‘Liar,’ she whispered before brushing his lips with her own.

Vance grasped her by the shoulders. ‘If you think seduction can wheedle anything out of me then you’re wrong.’

‘But you said you have no secrets, so how can there be anything to wheedle?’

They stared at each other, his grip on her shoulders tightening as he wrestled with himself. Inhaling shakily, Vance released her and took a step back.

‘You look disappointed,’ he said. ‘But I’m not sure whether that’s because I didn’t kiss you or because I didn’t tell you any secrets.’

‘Both.’

‘Sometimes ignorance is bliss.’

‘Christ, Vance, I hope whatever you’re up to won’t get us all killed.’

‘Of course not, I’d never risk that. It’s nothing to do with the Maguires if that’s what you’re worried about.’

‘It is.’

‘I’ve learnt from your mistakes.’

‘Bitch,’ she frowned, smiling when Vance chuckled. ‘And I’m glad you’ve learnt from my fuck ups otherwise we’re all dead meat. And you’re sure don’t want to confide in me?’

‘Yes.’

‘There was a time when we had no secrets from each other and before you say it, I know it’s my fault we lost that. Just please keep Reza on a tight leash. He’s a psycho and he hurts people for pleasure. That makes him extremely dangerous.
